Razor wire is a cheap, visible deterrent and it makes climbing a wall or fence slow and painful. It does nothing to raise an alarm on its own, so it works best as one layer with cameras, lighting and a fence that sounds a warning. Prices are quoted by the metre. Tell us the boundary, what it sits on and how exposed it is, and installers in your area quote you directly. It is free and there is no obligation.

Concertina or flat wrap

Razor wire comes in two main forms. Concertina coils are stretched along the top of a wall or fence like a spring, in single or double rows, and stacked in a pyramid on very high-risk boundaries. Common coil diameters are 450 mm, 730 mm and 980 mm, and the bigger coil makes a tougher obstacle. Flat wrap is a flat strip of barbed blades wrapped over a wall top or around a post. It is neater, looks less aggressive and suits residential walls where space is tight.

Coils are held on steel Y-posts or brackets bolted to the wall, with a tension wire running through them so the coil keeps its shape and cannot easily be pushed aside.

Galvanised or stainless steel

Galvanised razor wire is the standard choice inland and is the cheapest. Near the coast, salt air rusts galvanised blades and brackets within a few years, so ask for stainless steel or a heavier zinc coating in places like Durban, Cape Town and Gqeberha. Stainless steel costs more but lasts much longer, and rusted coil looks neglected as well as weakening. In all cases, ask whether the brackets and fixings are the same grade as the wire.

Razor wire pairs well with a palisade fence, a wall-top electric fence (the installer must keep the right spacing) or a brick wall with cameras. See CCTV installation for the camera layer that makes it effective.

Rules, neighbours and safe installation

Check your municipal by-laws, your title deed conditions and your estate or body corporate rules first. Many municipalities limit wire that overhangs a pavement or a neighbour's property, and some estates ban it. Talk to the neighbour if the wall is shared. Put the wire where it cannot injure passers-by, children, or people working on a shared wall, and add warning signs where it faces the public.

Installers should work in heavy gloves, long sleeves and eye protection, and bring waste bags to collect cut ends. Never allow loose offcuts to stay on a site or in a garden.

What it costs

A rough 2026 guide is R100 to R450 per metre installed, depending on coil size, steel grade, single or double rows, and the height of the wall. Flat wrap is generally cheaper than large concertina on a long run. Get quotes that list the coil diameter, the metal and the number of rows, so the offers can really be compared.

What to include in your request

  • Length of wall or fence in metres
  • What the wire will sit on and its height
  • Concertina or flat wrap, and the coil size
  • Galvanised or stainless steel (coastal sites)
  • Whether neighbours or estate rules apply

Razor Wire for different sites

  • Homeowners and families: flat wrap on a boundary wall top, kept clear of the pavement and neighbours
  • Estates, complexes and body corporates: usually limited or banned by estate rules, so check the design guidelines first
  • Offices, shops and retail centres: concertina on rear walls and yard fences behind the shop or workshop
  • Factories, warehouses and yards: double concertina on palisade fences around yards and storage areas
  • Building sites and contractors: coils on temporary fencing around site stores and plant yards
  • Farms and smallholdings: coils above a gate or fence near sheds, fuel tanks and workshops
  • Events, venues, hotels and lodges: discreet flat wrap on back walls, kept away from guest areas
  • Schools, clinics and churches: coils on school and clinic perimeter walls away from public paths

Frequently asked questions

Is razor wire legal on a home wall?
It depends on your municipality, title deed and estate rules, so check before ordering. Many places allow it if it does not overhang a pavement or neighbour. Ask your installer what they usually see in your area.
How long does razor wire last?
Galvanised wire inland can last 10 years or more, but near the sea it may corrode in two to five. Stainless steel lasts much longer in salty air. Check the wire and brackets once a year and replace rusty sections.
Can I use razor wire with an electric fence?
Often yes, but they must be kept apart so the coil never touches a live strand. A competent installer will plan the spacing and earthing. Do not mix them yourself, since a short circuit weakens the fence.
Does razor wire stop break-ins on its own?
No. It slows a climber, but a determined intruder can still get past it. It works best with lighting, cameras and a response plan, so someone sees and acts before the boundary is crossed.
