K9 security pairs a trained dog with a PSIRA-registered handler who patrols a site or checks vehicles and people. Dogs hear and smell what cameras and guards miss, and a visible dog team is a strong deterrent on large, dark yards. A dog left alone on a property is a different thing and brings legal and welfare problems. Tell us your site and hours, and security companies with dog units quote you directly. It is free and there is no obligation.

Dog and handler, not a dog alone

A professional K9 service is a team. The handler is a registered security officer who controls the dog, writes the patrol report and calls for help. The dog works for a shift, then rests in a vehicle or kennel. Unattended guard dogs loose in a yard are a risk to staff, delivery drivers and passers-by, and the owner is generally liable for injuries. Ask the company how the dog is controlled, where it rests and what happens if someone is bitten.

Patrol dogs and detection dogs

The two main kinds do different jobs, and a company may offer one or both:

  • Patrol dogs: trained to track, alert to intruders and stay under the handler's control. They suit yards, warehouses, mines and open sites at night.
  • Detection dogs: trained to find a specific scent, such as narcotics or explosives, and used for vehicle searches, event entrances and mines.

Ask for the dog's training records, the handler's PSIRA registration and how often the team is re-assessed. Dogs trained for detection should not also be used as attack dogs.

Welfare and standards

A good K9 company keeps its dogs fit and healthy: clean kennels with shade and water, regular veterinary checks and vaccinations, rest between shifts and shelter in extreme heat or cold. Dogs working a 12-hour night without a break are a red flag. You can ask to see the kennel and the vet records. Remember that you are hiring both a service and an animal, so a company that cuts corners on welfare will cut them elsewhere too. Also check how the team is transported to your site, since a dog travelling in a hot closed vehicle is a welfare failure that you should not accept. See security guards for the wider questions around shifts and contracts.

Where it works and what it costs

Dogs work best on large open sites with long perimeters: yards, depots, scrap and timber yards, mines, farms and event grounds. In a small suburban garden, a dog is rarely practical. K9 posts are priced per handler post per month, usually above a normal guard post because of the dog, its kennelling, feed and vet care, and more again for detection dogs and 24-hour cover. Combine them with CCTV monitoring so the handler is sent to a confirmed alert, not an empty corner.

K9 Security for different sites

  • Homeowners and families: rarely used, except for large plots where a handler patrols with a dog at night
  • Estates, complexes and body corporates: a dog and handler team on perimeter patrols of a large estate after dark
  • Offices, shops and retail centres: patrol dogs on parking lots, depots and car dealerships after hours
  • Factories, warehouses and yards: night dog patrols of yards and warehouses, plus detection dogs at the gate
  • Building sites and contractors: dog patrols on large sites with material stores, plant and copper cable
  • Farms and smallholdings: handler patrols of packhouses, stock sheds and long boundaries at night
  • Events, venues, hotels and lodges: detection dogs and crowd patrols at festivals, lodges and large venues
  • Schools, clinics and churches: dog patrols on school grounds and sports fields outside school hours

Frequently asked questions

Can I just put a guard dog on my property?
You can keep a dog at home, but a dog left to guard a business site with no handler can injure someone and expose you to claims. Professional K9 units with a registered handler are more controlled and carry the necessary insurance.
Do dogs replace guards or cameras?
No. A dog and handler team is another layer, and the handler is also a guard. Cameras show you what happened, guards check, and the dog adds detection on dark open ground.
Are K9 teams armed?
Not by default. Most dog and handler teams are unarmed, with the dog as the main tool. Armed K9 handlers exist for high-risk sites, and the handler must have firearm competency and a licence like any armed officer.
How long is a K9 contract?
Usually 12 to 36 months, because the company invests in training and kennelling. Check the notice period, what happens if the dog is replaced and whether a dog off sick is covered by a replacement team.
